Sleep is a vital ingredient to wellness-How To Eliminate Insomnia

Sleep is a huge part of health. Quality sleep is a must for optimal health. Insomnia is lack of sleep. To have insomnia is to feel that you are walking around in a daze, not fully awake at times. The CDC reported that one third of our population gets less than 7 hours of sleep per night. The US Department of Transportation found drowsiness/nodding off causes over 1500 deaths and 40,000 injuries per year.

Many people take medication in an attempt to get quality rest. Many are not aware that insomnia is often a symptom of a larger problem that involves the over-firing of the brain or imbalances in body chemistry. In our office, we use brain maps to determine if a person’s brain is over-firing and neurofeedback to rehab the brain. If the underlying cause of imbalanced brain waves is not properly dealt with these people often also end up dealing with symptoms like anxiety, chronic pain, tinnitus, poor memory and focus/attention difficulties.

Metabolic challenges are discovered using comprehensive blood testing and sophisticated questionnaires. It’s well known that several metabolic imbalances such as, adrenal fatigue, neurotransmitters deficiencies and mineral imbalances can lead to insomnia. We can help you uncover your chemical imbalances.

We have used neurofeedback for many years in cases in which people are dealing with insomnia. Neurofeedback is the non-invasive, non-drug, computerized balancing of brain waves that occurs while a patient watches a movie. Brain waves are the measurement of the electrical output of the human brain. Certain highs and lows in the brain are associated with neurobehavioral issues, including insomnia. It is very important for people to realize that there is a non-drug option in dealing with insomnia.

There are studies backing up the success we have had in our office helping people with sleeping problems. The Cartoos research group found total sleep time increased with neurofeedback training. The Hammer research group found neurofeedback improved sleep and daytime functioning. The Hoedlmoser research group found found NF leads to an increase in sleeping spindles during sleep, which is an important measure of improved sleep.

We are not anti-medication, but we understand the need to correct the cause instead of covering up the symptoms. Medications can also cause unwanted side effects. Possible side effects include: anxiety, decrease in sexual drive, difficulty with coordination, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, indigestion, nausea, nervousness, unpleasant taste, aggressive behavior, seizures and suicidal thoughts.

The bottom line is that insomnia frequently comes from an over-firing brain. We can help calm the brain with neurofeedback. The effects are thought to be permanent. Most of patients never have to see us again after we rehab their brain. Brain maps find the cause. Neurofeedback corrects the problem.

Note: One of the modalities we use to help optimize brain function is neurofeedback. Basic learning theory is the backbone of EEG biofeedback, which is more well known as neurofeedback. Neurofeedback trains the brain to enhance self-regulation and helps the body to find more efficient pathways so the body is better able to manage and heal itself. We do not ‘treat’ conditions with neurofeedback, but assist the nervous system to make adjustments to improve function. Users of neurofeedback learn to regulate their brain activity, resulting in improved brain performance.
