Improved Autistic Outcomes with Neurofeedback Training

Neurofeedback helps create better communication for patients on the autistic spectrum.

Autism, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and Asperger syndrome consist of a wide array of neurological challenges, usually first noticed during childhood development. Neurofeedback training is a non-invasive, drug-free technology that can help create new, more efficient neuropathways in the brain. These new neural connections will lead to a variety of improvements to daily life for both children and adults.  Improvements include improved communication, and they allow a higher level of calm and patience in the patient. An improvement in the ability to self-regulate and an increase in the predictability of their behavior is also seen.

Parents are a child’s best support system.

Parents are the main components in a child’s support system and know best what works well for your child and what does not.  You are the most knowledgeable person regarding where your child struggles and where they excel.  We offer a free initial evaluation where we discuss together how training works, how it can help your child, and outcome goals for the training.  During this consultation, we can decide if neurofeedback is an avenue to better health for your child.

Jonathon`s mom speaks about how neurofeedback and nutrition helped her son:

Dr. Johnson`s multi-faceted approach includes proper nutrition

A solid nutritional base is important in creating a healthy, stable, and balanced brain.  At Michigan Brain Health, we take a whole-body approach to health and believe creating a feasible nutritional plan will help the brain more easily create balance and restore neurotransmitters.  By working together with the mind and body, neurofeedback therapy will work faster, and changes will be seen more quickly.

The Neurofeedback Training sessions are fun and easy.

Before starting neurofeedback training, we utilize a technology called brain mapping.  Brain mapping allows us to analyze brain function, giving us a baseline of information.  Once a patient’s brainwaves have been reviewed an individualized neurofeedback training plan is put into place.

A typical 30-minute session is done in a relaxing environment while watching a video or listening to music (no violent or sexually explicit movies or music). We attach one or more small sensors to the scalp using a conductive paste to measure brain waves in real-time. This real-time feedback allows the audio and visual elements of the video (or in the case of audio-only, changes the volume) to encourage increases in brain waves that are lacking and/or decreases in brain waves that are too high. This training helps the brain create new neuropathways and balance brain waves.

Neurofeedback is painless, drug-free, and long-lasting.

Neurofeedback training can lead to many positive results, including clearer thinking, increased emotional control, and reduced feelings of stress.  In our experience, one of the first results parents notice is improved communication to and from their child.  Neurofeedback is training that happens subconsciously, and the pathways stay active long after the training has ended.  What’s more, this technology allows all of this to be done without the use of medication, so the treatment is free of side effects! The AAPB (Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback) rates neurofeedback’s help with ASD as Probably Efficacious: Level 3.
